La Concepción boasts one of the loveliest tropical and subtropical gardens in Spain, and one of the most popular in Europe. It was established in 1855 by the Marquises of Casa Loring, and expanded a few years later by the Echevarría-Echevarrieta family.
It was designated as a Historical and Artistic Garden (today’s Asset of Cultural Interest) in 1943. In 1990, it was transferred to the City of Málaga, opening to the public in 1994.

On the whole, the premises cover 23 hectares, while the historical-artistic garden itself covers 3 hectares. It was designed in the style of Romantic landscapes with Neoclassical elements, including a series of fountains and water springs, along with an amazing variety of subtropical plants from all over the world.

Garden visitors can see more than 25,000 plants and trees, divided into 2000 different species, including 90 types of palm trees and 200 native species.

The buildings on the premises include the Palace House, the Manager’s House, the Old School, the Gardener’s House, the Cypress House, the Loringiano Museum and the viewpoint overlooking the city, with its Regionalist dome.
Built by Rafael Echevarría around 1920, the viewpoint affords views of the Cathedral, Mount Gibralfaro and its castle, the Málaga Mountains and, in the background, the sea and the leafy grove of Hacienda San José across the motorway. Located in an unrivalled setting, it invites visitors to enjoy the quiet atmosphere as they soak up the views of both Málaga City and a huge variety of plants, flowers and trees.
