
Malaga's museum
Malaga's Museum holds the collections of two of the most distinguished museum institutions of Malaga, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Provincial Archaeology Museum which holds more than 15,000 references of archaeology and a wide painting's collection of more that 2,000 pieces which were produced along the xix and xx centuries. it is the 5th biggest museum of Spain and the largest of Andalucia.
The location of the Aduana Palace (Customs Palace) was planned in 1788. it is of neo-classic style and is built imitating the italian renaissance palaces with four galleries around an arcaded central courtyard. Also the Aduana has been the location for the "Real Fábrica de Tabaco" (Royal Tobacco Factory) and the "Subdelegación del Gobierno" (the Governments Branch Office) in the Province.
As a whole the museum holds an amazing Fine Arts section, which includes paintings and sculptures from relevant artists like Luis de Morales, Luca Giordano, Murillo, Antonio del Castillo, Alonso Cano, Ribera, Velázquez, Vicente Carducho, Goya, Pedro de Mena or Zurbarán.
The institution has in custudy what is considered as one of the largest painting collections of the xix century in Spain. composed of pieces of Sorolla, Carlos de Haes, Federico Madrazo, Esquivel, Vicente López Portaña or Ramón Casas, as well as the most relevant members the so called "Escuela Malagueña de Pintura" (Painting School of Malaga): Moreno Carbonero, Enrique Simonet, Muñoz Degrain, José Nogales or Bernardo Ferrándiz.
It also holds an interesting collection of Spanish Modern Art until the 1950's decade counting with pieces from Picasso, Rafael Canogar, Juan Barjola, Óscar Domínguez or Josep Guinovart, amongst others. the archeological collection has sites of more than 15,000 pieces, that go from the viii century to the Middle Ages.
During the last decades it has been incorporated to the collection pieces coming from excavation made by Malaga's University. Equally several lots of works have been included, which came from many prevention archaeological interventions of urgent nature that have taken place within malaga's city during the last 20 years.
