The 18th-century magazine houses an exhibition that depicts the life of the castle as a military garrison and coastal lookout post since 1487. In large cabinets, each dedicated to a century (16th–20th centuries), plans tracing urban development, weapons, uniforms and everyday objects are used to describe how the garrison lived during the various periods.

The collection

At the gates of the magazine we can see a large model of the city, with the 16th-century defensive walls, centred on Mount Gibralfaro and her foothills. The model depicts the Castle, the Alcazaba and other buildings in the area such as Bullring, City Hall, the Cathedral and the Palacio de la Aduana.

Thus model gives you an idea about the route around the walls of the fortress, where you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the entire city.

The exhibition presents the history of the castle through its inhabitants. The display cases contains mannequins dressed in the uniforms of the time. The first is a 16th-century Halberdier, with weapons and documents. The next century is represented by an arquebusier, a Spanish sword and a map of Málaga in 1693.

Not until the 18th century can you see maps showing the growth of the city on land regained from the sea. This period is represented by a "Regiment Fixo Málaga" soldier armed with musket and bayonet.

A 19th-century soldier of the N° 3 Reding Infantry Regiment and another from the Bourbon Line Regiment 17, complete the castle's military use, which ceased in 1925.

Model ships, navigational equipment, guns, lead soldiers and abundant documentation complete this exhibition.

The building

The Castle was built in the 14th century to house the troops and protect the Alcazaba, because of the widespread use of artillery.
