Larios Monument

Manuel Domingo Larios y Larios, promoter of the most important street in the city, the one that bears his name, has had his gaze fixed on this busy thoroughfare since 1899, the year in which the city of Málaga erected this monument in his honour.

The second Marqués de Larios was the main shareholder of the company that was created to build the street and which involved an investment of one million pesetas (6,000 euros).

The monument is the work of sculptor Mariano Benlliure, author of other works that can be admired in several museums in Málaga. It is cast in bronze and sits on a marble pedestal. The statue is flanked by two figures. A man holding a pick and a hoe, representing work, and a woman offering something to a child, representing charity.

The front of the pedestal reads "To Don Manuel Larios y Larios II, Marqués de Larios, with Málaga's gratitude", while the other faces bear the dates of his birth, death and when the statue was officially opened to the public. The statue is located at the confluence of Alameda Principal and Calle Larios, connecting with the Plaza de la Marina.
