Ataranzanas Central Market

Mercado de Atarazanas is a historic market located in the heart of Malaga. This architectural treasure showcases the city's rich heritage and gastronomy. However, it's also a must see if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture and soak up the city's atmosphere.

There are dozens of stalls where you can buy the freshest products (fish, seafood, organic fruit and vegetables. etc.) and plenty of places where you can buy a souvenir to remind you of what Malaga has to offer. You will find traditional products such as olive oils, typical sweets, cheeses, local cured meats, tinned products, etc. A whole symphony of flavours to savour the most authentic Malaga.

It is also the preferred spot for locals to eat the famous pescaíto frito (fried fish). It has stands for tapas at the bar and a terrace area for those who prefer to sit and eat more relaxed.

A stroll through the history of Atarazanas

The Atarazanas Market is set on the site of a 14th century Nasrid shipyard, when Malaga belonged to AI-Andalus. After the Christian conquest of the city, the space was used as a warehouse, arsenal, military hospital and barracks.

In 1870 it was demolished to provide work for the poorer classes and a project was drawn up by the municipal architect Joaquín Rucaba for a new market. Thanks to the intervention of the San Telmo Academy of Fine Arts, it was possible to save the old monumental gate of the building, which today can be seen on the main façade of the building.

Its architect, Rucaba, designed the pre-existing work in neo-Arabic language, although he applied glass and iron on a large scale. As a result, although almost the entirety of the old Muslim construction disappeared, Malaga obtained a fitting and necessary market building, which was inaugurated as such in 1879. Today, the Atarazanas Market is one of the best examples of 19th century architecture.
