Malaga celebrates its most seafaring days. The festival of Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of fishermen and sailors, takes place on 16th July. That is why over the coming days there will be a festive atmosphere in many neighbourhoods of the capital, while the Star of the Seas sails through the streets and seas and blesses them.

The scene will have a similar look in most cases, with men and women dressed in traditional ‘marengo’ (seafaring) dress, many of them barefoot, carrying oars in the processions and, above all, overflowing with emotion and feeling. The Virgen del Carmen will sail the sea in fishing boats called ‘jábegas’, escorted by dozens of vessels, and a tribute will be paid to those who lost their lives at sea.
