Saints, Queens and Workers. The Image of the Woman in Russian Art
- 26 Feb 2019 - 27 Feb 2020
The annual exhibitions presented at the Russian Museum Collection make it possible to obtain a glimpse of the culture, tradition and history of Russia through its art. While on previous occasions the common thread has been a historical period (The Romanovs, Brilliant Future) or a cross-cutting subject (The Four Seasons), in 2019 the common theme will be women. From the virgins in icons who transcend the hieratic codes of representation, with gestures of profound, simple humanity, to the amazons of the proletariat who show themselves to be proud in their work, fiercely independent, equal to their comrades, the gallery of female portraits selected by curator Evguenia Petrova will offer us not only a sampling of great Russian painting from all periods, with such artists as Repin, Kustodiev and Gerasimov, but also a snapshot of society through these female figures from all ages.
